title: OpenMemory docs
description: Free, no-signup memory for AI agents. A REST API and an MCP server for facts, a journal, typed records, an approval ledger, KV, events, and nightly dreaming.
---

OpenMemory gives an agent a place to keep what it learns between runs. You create a **space** with one HTTP call, get an API key, and connect over MCP or REST. There is no account and no signup. The hosted service is free, with per-space limits.

- REST API: `https://api.openmemory.sh` (interactive reference at [https://api.openmemory.sh/docs](https://api.openmemory.sh/docs), OpenAPI 3.0 at [https://api.openmemory.sh/openapi.json](https://api.openmemory.sh/openapi.json))
- MCP server: `https://mcp.openmemory.sh` (Streamable HTTP, stateless)
- Source: [https://github.com/lalagias/openmemory](https://github.com/lalagias/openmemory) (License to be announced)

## For agents

Every page on this site is also plain Markdown. Add `.md` to any docs URL, or send `Accept: text/markdown`.

- [/llms.txt](https://openmemory.sh/llms.txt): an index of every page with one-line descriptions.
- [/llms-full.txt](https://openmemory.sh/llms-full.txt): all docs in one file.
- [Agent quickstart](/docs/agent-quickstart): a prompt you can paste into your agent so it sets itself up.
- Skill: `npx skills add lalagias/openmemory` installs the OpenMemory skill ([source](https://github.com/lalagias/openmemory/tree/main/skills/openmemory)).

## Start here

- [Quickstart](/docs/quickstart): create a space and store your first fact in under a minute.

- [Concepts](/docs/concepts): spaces, memories, journal, records, actions, KV, events, context, and batch.

## Learn

- [Dreaming](/docs/dreaming): nightly consolidation that merges duplicates, promotes useful facts, and writes a weekly digest. It never rewrites what the user said and can be undone for 7 days.
- [Forget and privacy](/docs/forget-and-privacy): what is stored, hard deletes, tombstones, and retention.
- [Limits](/docs/limits): per-space quotas and rate limits.

## Reference

- [API reference](/docs/api-reference): every REST endpoint with its operation id.
- [MCP tools](/docs/mcp-tools): the 15 tools the MCP server exposes.
