FAQ
Common questions about OpenMemory - cost, accounts, keys, data, dreaming, and self-hosting.
Is it free?
Yes. The hosted service is free, with per-space limits (see Limits). There is no SLA.
Do I need an account?
No. POST https://api.openmemory.sh/v1/spaces returns a space id and a key. The key is the only credential.
I lost my key. Can I get it back?
No. Only a hash of the key is stored. Create a new space. The old one is deleted after 90 days without use.
Can I rotate a key?
Not in place. Export the space (GET /v1/export), create a new space, write the data you need into it, and delete the old space (DELETE /v1/space).
MCP or REST?
Use MCP when your agent runs in a client that supports it (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, the OpenAI Agents SDK). Use REST for your own code, scheduled jobs, and atomic batch writes, which are REST-only.
How is this different from a vector store?
OpenMemory stores short facts with full-text recall, not embeddings. Next to the facts it has a journal, typed records, an approval ledger with compare-and-set transitions, KV, an event log, and nightly dreaming that consolidates memory without touching what the user stated. See Concepts.
Does dreaming send my data to a model?
In client mode (the default), the service hands the job to your agent, which runs it on your own model. Nothing goes to a model from the service side. In server mode, the service runs the job on Cloudflare Workers AI. With off, nothing runs on a schedule. See Dreaming.
Can dreaming change what I told the agent?
No. Facts with origin user and pinned facts are never rewritten, merged away, or demoted. Every dream can be undone for 7 days.
How do I delete something for good?
Use forget with dry_run first, then without it. It hard-deletes and leaves only content-free tombstones. DELETE /v1/space removes everything. See Forget and privacy.
Does search work in my language?
Recall uses full-text search that folds case and accents and works in any script. Greek, for example, matches with or without tonos. Words match as prefixes.
Can several agents share a space?
Yes, if they share the key. Actions, records, and KV have compare-and-set operations, so concurrent agents do not overwrite each other or execute the same action twice.
Can I self-host?
Yes, on Node.js 22.18+ with built-in SQLite, or on your own Cloudflare account with Workers and D1. See Self-hosting.
What is the license?
License to be announced. The source is at https://github.com/lalagias/openmemory.
